    England openers steady

Another edge and the ball again goes between slips and gully for a four. Shami is operating at a probing line outside off stump to the left-hander but Rory Burns is up to the challenge. England openers look determined to cut down that lead as much as possible.

  • AUG 06, 2021 09:32 PM IST

    Burns whips for four

Shami, coming round the wicket, gets the ball to move in, but Burns gets the bat down in time and flicks it with tremendous timing. The ball races away for four, his first boundary of the innings. England 20/0 after 9 overs.

  • AUG 06, 2021 09:22 PM IST

    Siraj to Sibley: FOUR

Off the edge of the bat and the ball goes through slips and a wide gully for a four. Second boundary for Sibley and England. Siraj gets the ball to move a shade and draws Sibley into the drive.

  • AUG 06, 2021 09:17 PM IST

Shami to resume proceedings for India in final session

It was a bit surprising to see Mohammed Siraj open the bowling with Jasprit Bumrah for India. But the change arrived and Mohammed Shami is steaming in. And guess what? He immediately draws an outside edge that goes to gully on one bounce.

  • AUG 06, 2021 08:59 PM IST

    Tea on Day 3

That’s the end of the second innings. England 11/0 at tea, trail India by 84 runs at the interval. Dominic Sibley batting on 5 and Rory Burns on 1. Another session that sort of belonged to India. It could have been England’s but India’s tail wagged to give them a decent first-innings lead of 95 runs.

  • AUG 06, 2021 08:53 PM IST

Bumrah to Sibley: First four for England

Huge roar in the stadium as Dom Sibley gets off the mark after 17 balls. Siraj misses his line next ball and the batsman clips for a four. The applauds at Trent Bridge continues.

  • AUG 06, 2021 08:43 PM IST

    Did you know?

India have never lost a Test match in England on occasions they have achieved a first-innings lead of 75 runs or more. They have won four and drawn four.

  • AUG 06, 2021 08:42 PM IST

    Bumrah oversteps twice

Twice in two overs has Jasprit Bumrah overstepped. England 3/0 in 3 overs, two of which have come off no-balls. Testing period for Burns and Sibley as England would want these two to take them safely through to the tea interval.

  • AUG 06, 2021 08:31 PM IST

    Burns off the mark

Bumrah oversteps and the next ball slides down leg to allow Burns to get off the mark as he clips the ball off his pads. England 2/0 after the 1st over.

  • AUG 06, 2021 08:29 PM IST

    Out come the England openers

Rory Burns and Dominic Sibley have been under the pump. Burns was dismissed for a duck in the first innings. England would hope for a better start here, especially with the kind of lead India have over them. Right then, Bumrah starts for India.

  • AUG 06, 2021 08:18 PM IST

India all out, Robinson takes five

Robinson gets his fifth as the final Indian wicket falls. India all out for 278, with a first-innings lead of 95 runs. More importantly, the last wicket pair of Siraj (7*) and Bumrah (28) added 33 off 26 balls. After Jadeja got out, India added 46 runs. How important would those runs prove to be? Let’s find out as England get ready to begin their second innings.

  • AUG 06, 2021 08:11 PM IST

    Bumrah, Siraj frustrate England

This last wicket pair is filled with slogs from Siraj and some elegant shots from Bumrah, but these two have added 28 runs for the last wicket. India’s lead is 91, another 9 runs and what a bonus it will be. Anderson and Robinson have four wickets each. If these two continue, one is bound to end up with a five-for.

  • AUG 06, 2021 08:04 PM IST

Curran to Bumrah: Pulled for SIX

Whoa! Where did that come from? That is a Rohit Sharma-like pull. Spots the ball early and Bumrah gives it his all. The fielder at deep deep square leg seemed interested but even a full stretched jump was not going to be enough. Flies for six. And to add to England’s frustrations, the next ball goes off the edge over the top of slips for another four.

  • AUG 06, 2021 08:02 PM IST

Consecutive fours for India, they go past 250

Hang on! The tail is wagging. Siraj and Bumrah have helped themselves to a couple of boundaries. Siraj pumped Robinson down the ground for a four, followed by a lovely on drive from Bumrah. Golden runs these for India, they get to 250, the lead is 80 now.

  • AUG 06, 2021 07:58 PM IST

    WICKET: Robinson gets his fourth

OUT! England strike with the new ball as Robinson cleans up Shami. India 248/9. Big bat between bat and pad as the ball hits the front pad and crashes onto the stumps. Great chance for the pacer to go for his fifth.

  • AUG 06, 2021 07:45 PM IST

New ball due in 2 overs

India have a lead of 58 runs. That’s a decent margin to be ahead by, but can they stick around for another 30 runs maybe? England would run in with all the steam with the second new ball. India 242/8 with Shami and Bumrah batting.

  • AUG 06, 2021 07:32 PM IST

    WICKET: Jadeja goes for 56

OUT! Big wicket for England as Ravindra Jadeja goes for 56. Robinson gets his third to have India at 232/8. One shot too many. It was the final ball of the over, but instead of taking a single, Jadeja goes for it. Gets the edge, skies into the air and Broad completes the catch.

  • AUG 06, 2021 07:29 PM IST

FIFTY for Jadeja off 81 balls

Ravindra Jadeja is the name. Hammers a cut shot off Ollie Robinson to get to his half-century. He realises that India don’t have a strong tail so he’s taken upon himself to give India as big a lead as possible. And just as we write this, he drills Robinson down the ground for the second four of the over. India 232/7.

  • AUG 06, 2021 07:26 PM IST

Jimmy Anderson just moved into THIRD place on the all-time Test wicket-takers list

Say hello to the third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. It’s James Anderson, who has just overtaken Anil Kumble’s tally of 619 wickets to be placed next only to the great Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne. A true GOAT!

  • AUG 06, 2021 07:19 PM IST

    Anderson to Jadeja: FOUR, SIX

With three wickets, Jadeja surely isn’t holding back anymore. Gets a streaky boundary as the ball flies off the edge and into the boundary. But there were no half measures on the next stroke. Outside leg and Jadeja whips the ball over third man boundary for a six. Shades of Sanath Jayasuriya in that stroke. Jadeja moves to 45, India 218/7, lead England by 35.

  • AUG 06, 2021 07:09 PM IST

    Wicket: Anderson gets his fourth

OUT! That’s two wickets in two overs. Anderson picks up his fourth wicket as Shardul Thakur nicks to first slip. India 205/7. The ball holds its line but a lose shot from Thakur sends him back for a duck.

  • AUG 06, 2021 06:57 PM IST

WICKET! Big one for India as Rahul departs

OUT! Edged and taken… Anderson gets his man as KL Rahul falls for 84. India lose their 6th wicket for 205. Anderson will not have to wait any further. No fumbles this time as Jos Buttler completes a regulation catch. England and Anderson are delighted, and rightly so. Another wicket here and England have a strong chance of restricting India’s lead to inside 100.

  • AUG 06, 2021 06:55 PM IST

Rahul drives for FOUR… Elegance written all over it

He’s keen to make it count now. Half-volley and Rahul times his cover drive to perfection. Races away to the boundary. Also, the 200 is up for India as he goes to 84, only 16 short of what promises to be his most cherished century. India 205/5 in the 69th over

  • AUG 06, 2021 06:48 PM IST

Jadeja moves into the 30s with elegant boundary

On the pads and Jadeja flicks the ball with wonderful timing, beats the fielder at deep midwicket. With that, the 50-run partnership is up between Jadeja and Rahul. Extremely crucial runs for India these.

  • AUG 06, 2021 06:46 PM IST

    Dropped: Retrieve for India

Oh lord! What have England done here? They could have had a wicket first over of the new session but it’s their captain who spoils those plans. Rahul poked at Anderson outside off and the ball took a healthy edge to fly to first slip, where Joe Root fumbled and put it down. That’s second chance England have let go of Rahul. Loose stroke from Rahul but he gets a lifeline to correct himself here. 22 away from a century.

  • AUG 06, 2021 06:42 PM IST

    Second session underway

Anderson resumes for England and KL Rahul begins the second session with a single first ball. There is a 72 percent chance of rain today but with strong winds, hopefully, the clouds will go away.

  • AUG 06, 2021 06:28 PM IST

    What a tweet

How many argue with Vaughan? The former India captain loves to rib the Indian public, but after this tweet, that ought to change.

  • AUG 06, 2021 06:13 PM IST

Ravindra Jadeja joins an elite list

Ravindra Jadeja knocked off 2000 runs in Test cricket today, which makes him one of the few all-rounders to achieve the double of taking 200 wickets and scoring 2000 runs in Test cricket. In fact, Jadeja is the fifth fastest to have achieved this momentous feat, behind Ian Botham (42), Kapil Dev (50), Imran Khan (50) and teammate R Ashwin (51). WOW!

  • AUG 06, 2021 06:03 PM IST

    Lunch on Day 3

A fine session for India, who head into the lunch interval at 191/5. More importantly, they lead England by 8 runs with five wickets in hand. After an early rain delay and then losing Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja have put on 46 unbeaten runs of 96 balls to give India the lead. India would be happy with that session.

  • AUG 06, 2021 05:55 PM IST

1st Test, Day 3, Live: India in the lead

KL Rahul takes a single to drive his team into the lead. India 186/5, lead England by 3 runs. Excellent partnership developing here between KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja. With still five wickets in hand, India would want to swell it to at least 150.

  • AUG 06, 2021 05:49 PM IST

Another for Jadeja, he’s growing in confidence

Very similar to the previous straight drive, only this time it was a bit wide of long on. Broad overpitches and Jadeja drills the ball down the wicket to bring the difference to just one run. This partnership is 38 off 80 balls, extremely crucial for India.

  • AUG 06, 2021 05:37 PM IST

    Jadeja completes 2000 Test runs

That’s the first convincing shot from Jadeja. Full ball from Robinson but Jadeja shows the full face of the bat. Crisp timing from the left-hander and the ball races away to the ropes. With that Jadeja completes 2000 runs in Test cricket. India 175/5, behind England by only 8 runs now.

  • AUG 06, 2021 05:34 PM IST

    England lose their third review

A very strange review taken by England for a caught behind chance against KL Rahul. Broad bowled it full and Rahul let it go to the keeper. There was nothing on the naked eye but England went up. Root did not take long to take the review, sensing there was something. Fortunately for India, there wasn’t. Rahul stays on.

  • AUG 06, 2021 05:33 PM IST

    Broad to Rahul: FOUR

Textbook backfoot punch from KL Rahul, shows he’s been there since the very beginning. Length not bad from Broad, but terrific shot from Rahul as he rocks back onto the backfoot and punches the ball through the gap for his 11th four. That had Sachin Tendulkar written all over it.

  • AUG 06, 2021 05:23 PM IST

    Jadeja clips for FOUR

Jadeja in two minds – to play or leave, but manages to get his bat on the ball. Slightly losing his line, Robinson as he drifts the ball to Jadeja’s legs and the batsman tickles it past wicketkeeper Jos Buttler for his second boundary. India now trail by just 18 runs.

  • AUG 06, 2021 05:09 PM IST

Run out chance but Jadeja survives

Almost another Ajinkya Rahane-like dismissal there for India. Huge mix up between Rahul and Jadeja. Rahul had tapped the ball to the cover fielder and taken off. Jadeja responded too but it was a risky single. Thankfully for India, Dan Lawrence missed with the direct hit and even Jos Buttler couldn’t reach the stumps on time. Narrow escape for Jadeja.

  • AUG 06, 2021 04:57 PM IST

Jadeja off the mark with a boundary

Not the most convincing shot but Ravindra Jadeja gets a four to get off the mark. Robinson bowls with pace on Jadeja’s ribs. The batsman hopes but manages to get the shoulder of the bat to it, helping the ball along its way to the boundary.

  • AUG 06, 2021 04:55 PM IST

    Anderson to Rahul: FOUR

A huge LBW appeal against KL Rahul but turned down. Replay shows impact just outside off. Rahul responds in style with a cracking cover drive off Anderson, which gets the batsman his 10th four. Surely, he is the key for India going forward. They still trail by 34 runs.

  • AUG 06, 2021 04:52 PM IST

    WICKET: India lose Rishabh Pant

OUT! Robinson strikes, Pant hands a simple catch as India lose fifth wicket for 145. Having hit the previous two balls for a four and six, Pant was looking for a single, but the drive was lazy and uppish, and it went straight into the hands of Jonny Bairstow at covers. England get their first wicket of the day and India lose theirs.

  • AUG 06, 2021 04:45 PM IST

    Robinson to Pant: FOUR, SIX

Pant gets 10 off 2. A four and six, both coming off outside edges. The first shot was slightly streaky, kissing the outside edge of the bat and going past gully for a four. Next ball, Robinson dropped a bouncer, and Pant top edges as the ball goes sailing over the ropes.

  • AUG 06, 2021 04:43 PM IST

It’s started to rain again but play goes on

The rain picked up pace and the Indian players were ready to go off, but James Anderson and the umpires had a word and England players are not heading anywhere. Perhaps they convinced the official that it was going to be a passing shower. And guess what? That’s exactly what has happened. The brief spell of heavy rain has been reduced to a drizzle.

  • AUG 06, 2021 04:39 PM IST

Play resumes, Anderson beats Pant first up

Play resumes after almost a one-hour lay-off, and it begins with some drama as Anderson beats Pant. Huge appeal but nothing from the umpire. England think about the referral but decide not to go upstairs. Pant caps off the over with a single. India 133/4 in 49 overs.

  • AUG 06, 2021 04:22 PM IST

Rain has relented, play to resume at 4:35 PM IST

Good news coming from Nottingham. The rain has stopped and the covers have been taken off. After a long, hard look at the weather, the umpires have decided that play will restart 15 minutes from now.

  • AUG 06, 2021 04:13 PM IST

    Update: The drizzle is back

Nope! We will no longer have the restart that was scheduled at 4:10 PM. The drizzle is back and the covers are on again. The frustration continues.

  • AUG 06, 2021 04:02 PM IST

Play to resume. No, scratch that

The covers are coming off, if there’s no rain, we will start in 10 minutes. But guess what? Just as we were typing this, the rain is back again.

  • AUG 06, 2021 03:52 PM IST

    Weather update: Nottingham

Looks like the rain has stopped. It’s still cloudy and the covers are on but the umpires and the groundsmen are standing without an umbrella, so there’s some good news but don’t get too optimistic.

  • AUG 06, 2021 03:47 PM IST

    Hover cover is on

It’s not looking good right now. The hover cover is on, which means the groundstaff expect the rain to continue for some time. The forecast was clear for the first half of the day but it changed drastically.

  • AUG 06, 2021 03:43 PM IST

    Rain stops play

This is so so frustrating. We had just 11 balls of play on Day 3 and the skies opened up. The players have to rush. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant run inside the dressing room trying to cover their bats. India are 132/4

  • AUG 06, 2021 03:38 PM IST

    Pant charges Anderson

FOUR! Pant charges down the track and hits James Anderson past mid off for a boundary. What a start by the left-hander. It was almost like a slap shot. He tried something similar on Day 2 against Anderson but got a top edge but this makes good connection.

  • AUG 06, 2021 03:38 PM IST

    Robinson starts well

A maiden to start for Ollie Robinson. The tall right-arm seamer was one of the impressive ones on display yesterday. India will have to be careful with the awkward angles he creates along with the bounce.

  • AUG 06, 2021 03:31 PM IST

    Rahul is away

Runs straightaway for India. KL Rahul gets his first runs of Day 3 with a soft pish towards the off side. India 126/4

  • AUG 06, 2021 03:29 PM IST

We are all set for live action

KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant have walked out. This is going to be an important session, perhaps the most important one in the match. Anderson has the ball in hand, he still needs to bowl two deliveries to complete the over.

  • AUG 06, 2021 03:19 PM IST

James Anderson 1-0 Virat Kohli in 2021

Perhaps the greatest battle of modern-day cricket. Sanjay Manjrekar and Ajay Jadeja in commentary yesterday had said that if the Anderson vs Kohli battle was a tennis match then the first set (2014) went to Anderson, Kohli came back to take the second set in 2018 but in the third set, Anderson has won the first game by dismissing the Indian captain for a golden duck.

  • AUG 06, 2021 03:05 PM IST

Rishabh Pant can change the game

But don’t take your eyes off Rishabh Pant. If he gets going, he can take them away from England very quickly and put India into the driver’s seat.

  • AUG 06, 2021 02:49 PM IST

    KL Rahul holds the key

KL Rahul has so far looked the best batsman in this Test match by far. The right-hander who was not even supposed to play this match, was asked to open for India in the longest format after almost two years as Mayank Agarwal was ruled out because of concussion. Rahul did a fantastic job. He put on a 97-run opening stand with Rohit Sharma and when wickets started to tumble at the other end, he held his nerve and batted till rain intervened. India would be hoping something similar from Rahul on Day 3 if they want to take a lead and take back the control of this Test.

  • AUG 06, 2021 02:40 PM IST

    Day 3 weather update

First things first, the weather update of Day 3: As per latest reports, it is not raining in Trent Bridge, Nottingham and more importantly, the sun is out, which means we the chances of getting a full day’s play are bright. But you never quite with the weather in England.

  • AUG 06, 2021 02:31 PM IST

    Day 2 recap

India should have been holding the upper hand comfortably but for a brilliant spell by James Anderson. He removed Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli off successive deliveries after Ollie Robinson removed opener Rohit Sharma. Minutes later Ajinkya Rahane fell to suicidal run out and the game was back on level terms.
